Drug Abuse Status and Its Related Factors of Middle School Students in Daegu

Abstract
Objectives : To examine the drug abuse status and its related factors of the middle school students in Daegu.

Methods : A self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out for 3.482 middle school students(1,768 boys and 1.714 girls) in Daegu from September to October in 1999. The study population were selected by cluster sampling method; one boys¡¯ and one girls¡¯ school from each district, 2 classes from each grade.

Results : Overall proportion of drug abuse experience in boy students was 9.4%; 0.3% of the sedatives, 8.9% of the pain-killers, 0.2% of the stimulants, 0.3% of the narcotics, 0.2% of the cough mixtures and antihistamines, 0.3% of inhalants. In girl students, the proportion of the drug abuse experience was 21.1%; 0.8% of the sedatives, 20.1% of the pain-killers, 1.5% of the stimulants, 1.5% of the narcotics. 1.6% of the cough mixtures and antihistamines, 0.2% of inhalants, 0.1% of hemp leaf cigarets. The mean depression score was 13.2¡¾7.3 for boy students and 14.0¡¾7.8 for girl students. The mean depression score was increased as the grade increased. In multiple logistic regression analysis, the poor record at school and the higher depression scores were significantly related with the drug abuse experience in boy students. and the lower educational level of mother. drug abuse of intimate friend, generous attitude to the drug abuse, no recognition of the fact that the laws prohibit middle school students from smoking and drinking, and the higher depression scores were significantly related with the drug abuse experience in girl students.

Conclusion : To prevent students from the drug abuse. better concerted efforts of home, society and school are needed.
